Chippendale Chair

This chair is modeled after an Eliphalet Chapin chair held in the collections of the Connecticut Historical Society. The carvings and fretwork on the back splat and crest rail have been faithfully reproduced from photos and measurements of the original chair.

This chair is made from one solid wide Cherry board with particular attention paid to the growth ring orientation and color of the wood. The proper selection of wood and a knowledge of grain orientation allows for a subtle yet powerful visual impact in the overall flow of the chair.

The warm shellac finish is painstakingly applied using traditional hand padding techniques which brings out the rich complexities of the ever darkening Cherry wood.
